Finn Gustav Bengtsson, born 4 June 1956, is a Swedish politician (moderate), who is a Member of Parliament since 2006. During the term of 2006-2010 he served as Deputy Governor of Gunilla Carlsson. During that term, he was an alternate member of the Social Committee, the Social Insurance Committee and the Board of the Foundation of the Riksbank's Jubilee Fund. During the following mandate period 2010-2014, Bengtsson was a member of the Social Insurance Committee and the Board of Directors of the Foundation, the Riksbank's Jubilee Fund and alternate member of the Finance Committee. The term 2014-2018 is Bengtsson member of the Social Committee. He is elected for the county of Östergötland. Bengtsson is a senior physician and professor of clinical pharmacology.

Pharmacology

Dr. Tirotta has been an active member of Miami Children’s Hospital medical staff since 1991, practicing with the Department of Anesthesiology; he has served as the Director of Cardiac Anesthesia since 2002. He has served as Chief of the Department of Anesthesia since July 2017. He also has a clinical appointment with the Department of Anesthesiology at The University of Miami School of Medicine Dr. Tirotta received his BA from Cornell University in 1982 and his MD from New York University School of Medicine in 1986. He also received an MBA degree from Columbia University in 1999. Dr. Tirotta completed his internship in Internal Medicine at SUNY at Stony Brook in 1987. He completed his residency training in anesthesiology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1990; he subspecialized in pediatric and cardiovascular anesthesia, including heart transplantation. In 1994, Dr. Tirotta created and produced the widely acclaimed pre-operative educational video titled, “A Hospital Trip with Dr. Bip”. This program, narrated by the endearing animated character Dr. Bip, explains to young children what to expect when they go to the hospital for surgery. It also includes coloring books and stickers. This program was exhibited at numerous national medical conventions and has sold thousands of copies all over the English-speaking world. Dr. Tirotta is a member of numerous professional societies and has served on a number of hospital committees, including the Heart Program Executive Committee. He previously served as the Co-Chair of the Miami Children’s Hospital Physician Hospital Organization. He is also responsible for giving numerous medical lectures nationally and internationally and is actively engaged in clinical research. He has been the Principal Investigator on a number of clinical drug/device trials, including on the ONQ Pain Buster, the muscle relaxant Zemuron, the procoagulant RiaSTAP, the Cardiotronic NICOM device and the ClearLine. He will also be the Principal Investiagator in Merck’s Sugammadex pediatric trial and Pacira Pharmaceuticals pediatric Exparel trial.

Dr. Joseph L. Borowitz served as a Professor of Pharmacology at the Purdue University. His research work revolved around neurotoxicity of cyanide. He completed his bachelors of science in the year of 1955 from Ohio State University. He obtained his masters of science from the Purdue University in the year of 1957. He have recieved his Ph.D. in the year of 1959 from the Northwestern University. Dr. Borowitz is currently serving as a Professor Emeritus of Pharmacology at the Purdue University.

Prof. Karen Mulkijanyan heads the Department of Preclinical Pharmacological Research at Tbilisi State Medical University Institute of Pharmacochemistry. He holds MS in Biochemistry and PhD in Pharmacy. K.Mulkijanyan’s research areas are: pharmacology of anti-inflammatory and wound healing drugs; analysis of SAR and prediction of bioactivity of natural, modified and synthesized compounds; technology transfer and commercialization; laboratory animal science. He has extended his valuable service in Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences, Claremont, California for 14 years and has been a recipient of many award and grants. Mohamed Eddouks is Professor at Moulay Ismail University, Faculty of Sciences and Techniques Errachidia, Morocco. He is a researcher in Physiology and Pharmacology with a Master Degree in Metabolic and Molecular Endocrinology from University of Paris vi, a specialized certificate in Endocrine Pharmacology from University of Paris vii and PhD degrees in Physiology and Pharmacology from University of Liege, Belgium and Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University, Fez, Morocco. After his post-doctoral fellowship at Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine of Montreal, Canada, he is working for the last 16 years on medicinal plants. His work on antidiabetic and antihypertensive plants is well recognized globally. His research focuses on ethnobiological as well as pharmacological issues in the use of Moroccan medicinal plants for the treatment of diabetes mellitus, obesity and hypertension. His contribution to this field includes four international books and more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters of international repute. Jan Olof G. Karlsson has a PhD in pharmacology from Linköping University, Sweden, where he also became an assistant professor of pharmacology in 1991. Between 1990 and 1992 he held a position as a research fellow at the Swedish Medical Research Council. Thereafter he was offered a position as a senior research scientist at Nycomed Imaging AS in Oslo. He was a member of the Visipaque project that developed an x-ray contrast agent that is one of the absolute best selling contrast agents today. Karlsson worked for Nycomed Imaging, which later became GE Healthcare, until 2007. He has successfully supervised three PhD students and number of students during their Master works. Karlsson has published more than 70 scientific papers. Among his original discoveries, one can mention his discovery that photorelaxation is mediated by cGMP and that MnPLED-derivatives possess SOD-mimetic activity. Karlsson is inventor on nine issued patent families and on three additional patent applications. Of these ten applications, he is the main inventor on six of them. During the early 1990’s Karlsson was involved in research showing that the MRI contrast agent mangafodipir and other MnPLED-derivatives possess SOD-mimetic activity, a potentially useful property in treatment of variety of pathological conditions. Karlsson is a member of the Senior Editorial Board of the American Journal of Cancer Therapy and Pharmacology. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Spago Imaging AB.

Vladimir P. Torchilin is a University Distinguished Professor and Director, Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Nanomedicine, Northeastern University, Boston. He graduated from the Moscow University with MS in Chemistry, and obtained there his Ph.D. and D.Sc. in Polymer Chemistry and Chemistry of Physiologically Active Compounds in 1971 and 1980, respectively. In 1991, Dr. Torchilin joined MGH/Harvard Medical School as the Head of Chemistry Program, Center for Imaging and Pharmaceutical Research, and Associate Professor of Radiology. He was the Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1998-2008. His research interests include liposomes, lipid-core micelles, biomedical polymers, drug delivery and targeting, pharmaceutical nanocarriers, experimental cancer immunology. He has published more than 350 original papers (which received more than 30,000 citations), more than 150 reviews and book chapters, wrote and edited 10 books.

Henry M. Sobell completed his studies at Brooklyn Technical High School (1948- 1952), Columbia College (1952-1956), and the University of Virginia School of Medicine (1956-1960). Instead of practicing clinical medicine, he then went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to join Professor Alexander Rich in the Department of Biology (1960-1965), where, as a Helen Hay Whitney Postdoctoral Fellow, he learned the technique of single crystal X-ray analysis. He then joined the Chemistry Department at the University of Rochester, having been subsequently jointly appointed to both the Chemistry and Molecular Biophysics departments (the latter at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry), becoming a full tenured Professor in both departments (1965-1993). He is now retired and living in the Adirondacks in New York, USA.

Professor Raid Alany has over 25 years of international experience in pharmacy education, pharmaceutics and drug delivery research. His academic journey spans three continents, namely, Asia, Oceania and Europe. He received his PhD in drug delivery from the University of Otago, Dunedin New Zealand in 2001; was appointed as a Lecturer at the School of Pharmacy, The University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand, in 2001 where he was responsible for establishing the first pharmaceutics curriculum at The University of Auckland. He was promoted to a Senior Lecturer in 2004, appointed as Head of Pharmaceutics in 2007, promoted to Senior Lecturer above the bar in February 2009; appointed as Honorary Associate Professor in 2011. He joined Kingston University London as Professor (Chair) of Pharmaceutics in January 2011 and was appointed as Research Director for the School of Pharmacy and Chemistry in December 2013. He has been appointed as the Inaugural Head of School of Life Sciences, Pharmacy and Chemistry on 1st of June 2015. Volkmar Weissig, Sc.D., Ph.D. is a Tenured Full Professor of Pharmacology and Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Weissig received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry and his postdoctoral Sc.D. degree in Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology from the Martin-Luther University in Halle (Germany). Combined he completed several years of postdoctoral fellowships at the Cardiology Research Center in Moscow (Russia), at the Academic Department of Medicine at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in London (UK), at the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the Czechoslovakian Academy of Science in Prague (CSFR), at the College of Pharmacy and the College of Medicine at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL and at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. Before joining the faculty at Midwestern University, Dr. Weissig was an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. Dr. Weissig holds 16 patents and he has published 98 research papers, review articles and book chapters, mostly in the area of nano drug delivery systems. He also edited and published 8 books. He serves as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Liposome Research and he is member of several other Editorial Boards. In July 2009 Dr. Weissig was inducted into the World Technology Network as a Fellow. In October 2014 Dr. Weissig was elected President of the World Mitochondria Society.

Dr. Weissig’s major research interests lie in the areas of Mitochondrial Medicine and Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology. In particular, his laboratory has pioneered the design and development of mitochondria-targeted nano drug delivery systems, which have opened new strategies for mitochondrial gene therapy, for apoptosis-based anticancer chemotherapies and for controlling and manipulating the redox status of mammalian mitochondria.

Vaclav Vetvicka, Ph.D., is a Professor of Pathology and Director of Research at the Department of Pathology of the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated from Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic with an advanced degree in biology and obtained his Ph.D. from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. His postgraduate training included a stay at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Oklahoma City, OK, and at the Institute of Microbiology, Prague, Czech Republic. In addition to the glucan research, Dr. Vetvicka helped to launch glucan in several countries including USA, France, Turkey and Czech Republic. Dr. Vetvicka is author and co-author of more than 220 peer-reviewed publications, eight books and nine international patents.

Dr Irena Zizovic is a Professor at Division of Bioprocess and Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Chemistry, Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. She received her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Belgrade, Serbia in 2006. Her current research work is in application of supercritical fluids with a focus on development of polymer based materials with antibacterial properties and novel drug delivery systems. She is a leader of team that consists of scientists in chemical engineering, pharmacy and microbiology. She authored and coauthored 8 chapters in international editions, more than 50 articles in international journals and two patents. Dr Irena Zizovic has been a member of the Working Party on High Pressure Technology of the European Federation of Chemical Engineers (EFCE) since 2014.

Current research interests of Prof. Irena Zizovic include development of polymer based materials with antibacterial properties or for controlled drug release by: supercritical solvent impregnation of polymers with pure compounds or plant extracts, polymer foaming and impregnation in supercritical carbon dioxide and fabrication of solid dispersions of drugs in polymers.

Qiang Zhou, Ph.D., is a Professor of Chemical Biology and Biotechnology at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School. Trained as an electrophysiologist and neuroscientist, Dr. Zhou’s research has evolved from studies in ion channels and receptors, to synaptic transmission and plasticity, and further to neural network and behavioral analysis. His expertise also includes fluorescence imaging techniques and molecular biology approaches, and he is one of the world leading experts in combining electrophysiological recording with real time fluorescence imaging. He had worked in both academia and pharmaceutical industry. He underwent his postdoc training at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Emory University, and Kyoto University. Prior to that, he worked for three years on computer-assisted drug design at the Novartis institute in Japan. Dr. Hirao’s research applies quantum chemistry, multiscale models, and many other computational chemistry techniques to a variety of complex molecular systems of practical importance such as metalloenzymes and drugs/drug targets. He is also interested in developing new concepts and computational methods that may enhance our understanding of chemistry or improve the efficiency of computational analyses.

Before joining the faculty at Midwestern University, Dr. Weissig was an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. Dr. Weissig holds 16 patents and he has published 98 research papers, review articles and book chapters, mostly in the area of nano drug delivery systems. He also edited and published 8 books. He serves as the Associate Editor of the Journal of Liposome Research and he is member of several other Editorial Boards. In July 2009 Dr. Weissig was inducted into the World Technology Network as a Fellow. In October 2014 Dr. Weissig was elected President of the World Mitochondria Society.

Dr. Weissig’s major research interests lie in the areas of Mitochondrial Medicine and Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology. In particular, his laboratory has pioneered the design and development of mitochondria-targeted nano drug delivery systems, which have opened new strategies for mitochondrial gene therapy, for apoptosis-based anticancer chemotherapies and for controlling and manipulating the redox status of mammalian mitochondria.

Professor Raid Alany has over 25 years of international experience in pharmacy education, pharmaceutics and drug delivery research. His academic journey spans three continents, namely, Asia, Oceania and Europe. He received his PhD in drug delivery from the University of Otago, Dunedin New Zealand in 2001; was appointed as a Lecturer at the School of Pharmacy, The University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. He joined Kingston University London as Professor (Chair) of Pharmaceutics in January 2011 and was appointed as Research Director for the School of Pharmacy and Chemistry in December 2013. Raid is an author on over 200 scientific research publications (papers and abstracts), a book and seven book chapters. Professor Alany acts as Editor-in-Chief for Pharmaceutical Development and Technology, Section Editor for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology the official journal of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists; Chief Patron, Drug Development and Therapeutics, a publication of Organization of Pharmaceutical Unity with BioAllied Sciences (OPUBS). He serves on the Editorial Board of the following journals: Current Medical Research and Opinion, BioMed Research International, Journal of Drug Delivery Science and Technology, Current Drug Delivery, Pharmaceutics MDPI, and Drug Delivery Letters. He is the Immediate Past President of the New Zealand Chapter of the Controlled Release Society (NZCRS), Young Scientist Committee of the Controlled Release Society. Raid won several awards such as Microscopy New Zealand Young Scientists Award in 1999 The University of Auckland's Vice Chancellor's Early Career Research Excellence Award in 2003, the Controlled Release Society Veterinary Programme co-chair/ chair Distinguished Service Awards in 2008/2009 and the Spark Ideas Challenge, Uniservices Prize and Chiasma Prize in 2011. He consults for human and veterinary pharmaceutical companies in New Zealand and Singapore and is an inventor on several international patents.

Arwyn gained his PhD in protein biochemistry and crystallography at Birkbeck College, University of London. Then he undertook postdoctoral positions investigating endocytosis at the University of Liverpool and Harvard University, Boston USA. In 2000 he was awarded a European Molecular Biology Organization fellowship to work at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Heidelberg Germany, and continued at the EMBL when he was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Scholarship. He was appointed as Lecturer at the Cardiff School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Cardiff University in 2002 where he is now a Professor in Membrane Traffic and Drug Delivery. In addition to scientific research, Arwyn also has a very wide interest in public engagement with science and has organised a number of large exhibitions focusing on e.g. stem cell biology, tissue engineering, pollination and neuroscience. Through a BBC scholarship, he gained a Diploma in Journalism qualification from Bangor University in 2001 and for a number of years he has been a regular face and voice in the Welsh media discussing scientific issues.

Projects in his lab fall under cancer cell biology, endocytosis and drug delivery, concentrating on linking endocytosis research to enhance our capacity to deliver therapeutics to defined regions of cells. He actively collaborates with a number of national and international groups including his recent strong involvement with COMPACT (http://www.compact-research.org/) - an academic/industrial consortium collaborating on the Optimisation of Macromolecular Pharmaceutical Access to Cellular Targets. Arwyn has published widely within the fields of endocytosis and drug delivery especially within the remit of early endosomal traffic and the utilization of Cell Penetrating Peptides as drug delivery vectors. He currently sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Controlled Release and Membranes.

Amiram Goldblum is the Head of the Molecular Modeling and Drug Design and Discovery Unit at the Institute for Drug Research of the Hebrew University. Following a BSc in Chemistry and Physics and a MSc in QM studies of molecular spectra, his PhD is in Organic Reaction Mechanisms (Mechoulam, Hebrew U). He completed his Post-doctoral studies of Quantum Biochemistry (Paris), QSAR and QM reaction mechanisms (California). He receieved his first award at the American Chemical Society National Meeting in Washington DC 2000 for his algorithm called "Iterative Stochastic Elimination" (ISE) used to solve extremely complex combinatorial problems and focuses in recent years on Molecular Discovery by Chemoinformatics.

Gabriele Sadowski is full Professor for Thermodynamics. Her main fields of research are thermodynamics of biological and pharmaceutical systems. She has published about 150 papers, is Chair of the German Working Party of Thermodynamics and member of the German Academy of Technical Sciences. 2011, she received the prestigious Leibniz award.

Costas Kiparissides is a full time Professor of Chemical Engineering Department (AUTH) since 1981. He was Director of CPERI (2001-2006) and CERTH (2005-2010). He received his diploma in Chemical Engineering from NTUA (1971) and his Ph.D. from McMaster University (1978). He has supervised more than fifty Ph.D. students, 160 diploma theses and has presented more than 300 invited seminars and lectures. He has published 210 papers in refereed journals, 430 conference papers and 24 books and reports. His research interests include advanced multi-scale modeling of chemical and biological systems, functional materials, drug delivery systems, and microbial production of functional biopolymers.

Mino Caira has directed the Centre for Supramolecular Chemistry Research at the University of Cape Town (UCT) since 2005. He retired as Professor of Physical Chemistry in 2014 and was subsequently appointed as a Senior Scholar in the Department of Chemistry at UCT. His expertise is in the area of solid-state chemistry of drug polymorphs and novel multi-component systems containing active pharmaceutical ingredients. He has published over 300 papers in international journals and since 2009 has served on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

B. B. Barik has completed his Ph.D. in 1993 from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India. He is the Professor in the department of Pharmaceutics, College of Pharmacy, Jazan University, KSA. Earlier he worked as professor and head in the Univ Dept of Pharm Sci, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, India and College of Pharmaceutical Sci, Berhampur, Odisha. He has published more than 50 papers in reputed journals and presented more than 100 papers in national and international conferences. Merari Tumin Chevalier has completed a 5 years degree in Chemistry from National University of Mar del Plata. Currently, she is working on her PhD thesis at the Research Institute in Materials Science and Technology (INTEMA)- CONICET (Argentina), particularly in the Group of Polymer Matrix Composite Materials led by Dra. Vera Alvarez. The goal of her work is to develop and study effective biopolymeric drug carriers. At the present time, she is doing a six month residence in the Polymer Science and Technology Institute (ICTP)-CSIC (Madrid) in order to acquire new knowledge regarding the preparation and characterization of polymeric nanoparticles.
